Cloud computing is the latest trend with in the IT industry and all the big players are heavily investing in it like Microsoft, Amazon, and Google. I do believe it is the future, but the biggest question is when.
On paper, Cloud computing for your business, with no capital expenditures and infrastructure needed, looks like a dream come true, but you must look at the fine print that most organizations overlook.
Geographic location is one of the most important things to consider. If your business is in Canada, you are at a disadvantage right out of the gate with Cloud computing. We are a large country that has a small, wide spread population, which creates some of the highest priced internet connection costs in the world.
Cloud vendors often fail to mention that your current internet connection will not support the increased traffic to your servers and data that is now somewhere thousands of kilometers away. The increased cost of this alone can run the ROI right out the window.
Another fine print item to look for is how you get your data out of the Cloud if you decide to move to another company or bring things back internally. This can be a big roadblock for companies since data usually comes back in raw format with no configurations attached to it, creating an IT infrastructure nightmare.
Make sure you ask these questions and do your due diligence before you venture out into the storm.
Don’t get me wrong, we have many customers that utilize the power of the cloud for certain aspects of their business, but it is important to know all the information about the Cloud before moving to it.
